UN official
The prevalence of the deadly virus HIV/AIDS is still in tolerable level in
Bangladesh, said a UN official on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) here on
Monday.
The UNODC Regional Office for South Asia (ROSA) representative
Cristina Albertin made the remarks when she called on the Bangladeshi Foreign
Minister Dipu Moni.
A press release of the Foreign Ministry said Dipu
Moni asked the UN official to continue its support to Bangladesh in undertaking
various programs for preventing HIV prevalence and abuses of
drugs.
Cristina briefed Dipu Moni of her organization's activities in the
field of counter narcotics enforcement, prevention of HIV, and prevention and
treatment of drug use in Bangladesh.
Dipu Moni said although the HIV
prevalence in Bangladesh is quite low, the government is fully alert on the
issue.
During the last 20 years, 1,745 persons were infected by HIV/ AIDS
in Bangladesh of whom 204 persons died of AIDS till December 2009. The first
case of HIV carrier was detected in 1989 in the country.
"The government
has enacted several laws to encounter drug trafficking and local drug trades,"
the Foreign Minister said.
UNODC Regional Office for South Asia is based
in New Delhi and is responsible for its operations in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan,
the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
